Of course working with fluorite is difficult even today. Also the early Canon 300's are the first lenses to use fluorite crystal lens elements. Blazing sharp on 35mm film, forget medium format film, by the time you get a shot in focus the 35mm guy will have taken 50 shots and left. I only have a couple of L class FD lenses but they really are in a league of their own. That said the New F-1 is a great machine, I've run a few rolls of film through mine and the shots came out perfect. And that is what Canon gave them when they introduced the L series. It's true, Nikon had much "fancier" cameras, but people didn't want fancier cameras, they wanted fancier lenses. That was when they took over the industry and never looked back.
